Another reason to replace your door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle could be extremely dangerous, particularly if your children or elderly family members are unable to open it and end up trapped in the. It's a good thing that it's simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the old one.
Most modern door handles are a standard size and therefore are suitable for any door. If you're not sure whether the new door handle you're buying will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will allow you to purchase the correct size door handle.
The easiest method to take off the handle from your door is to take it off of the door. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles have the cover plate, which conceals the screws used to mount them. You will need to remove it to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is attached to ensure that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.
You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you'll need to locate the small latch that is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, remove the handle from the strike plate, and then the latch off the door's edge.
Removing the Strike Plate
When you replace the handle, you'll be required to replace the latch plate that holds the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The packaging that the new handles arrive with will offer two latch plates: either a rectangular or circular (see the diagram above detailing door handle parts). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it over to the round one so that the latch hooks into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to use.
The first step is to unhook the screw that holds the old latch plate. The screws are usually quite tight and require a bit of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be helpful to have another person assist you with this task.
After the screws have been removed the latch should slide out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This can help loosen the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Using the wood screws that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this could cause damage to the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, close and open the door to determine whether it locks and closes properly. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.
If the door is still moving or jiggles, then you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the incorrect size of the latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, using an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.
Removal of the Latch
The latch is an angled metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also catches the door's frame so that the door remains closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, an upgrade to the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the issue.
The screws that support the door latch are difficult to see however, you can put a screwdriver in a small hole in the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it'll be easy to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the latch and spindle in place.
If the latch isn't able to be released you can try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed slot of the latch, and gently twist it or jiggle until the that the latch and handle are beginning to separate. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you are able to pull the latch out.

Once the old latch is removed it should be possible to insert the new latch into the slot without difficulties. Use your new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.
Measure the existing backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is in line with the measurement.
If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you will need a new one. If you're not changing locks, the new latch will fit into the existing recess and work just fine with the keys you have currently. Pick a latch that has rectangular cover plates that match your existing handles.
Remove the cover plate

Not all doors have this gap. If yours doesn't allow for a handle, you'll have to drill a new hole in the door. The process for doing this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with the lock, however you'll have to be extra careful not to harm the frame or door.
After the holes are drilled after which you'll have to put in new screws for the door knob.
